Changes in the Sociology curriculum

The study program of the Sociology degree taught by the University of Chile seems to me to be a program of excellence, since it includes and provides students with a broad theoretical and methodological training regarding the most current and contingent themes and tools that allow for the measurement of social reality, in order to be able to contribute with empirical evidence to society, with the aim of contributing to the understanding and critical capacity of people and social and institutional institutions in the country.

However, I believe that the programme of the Sociology degree suffers from a great problem and this is the one that focuses too much on academic training for research and teaching and not so much on the exercise of the degree in the non-academic work environment. This means that the program focuses on preparing students to be great researchers, so the courses taught in the degree program become theoretical work (mostly), with little practice in programs and software used in the labor market.

This problem can be evidenced many times when we hear our colleagues say "what does a Sociologist do at work outside the academic field? However, I have heard rumors from the corridor that the authorities of the career have realized this problem and are thinking of different options to solve it, for example, replace the completion of a thesis at the end of the career by more work practices, which seems to me an idea and a very appropriate solution and bright!
